AI Literacy

Guidelines for the use of generative AI in teaching and learning that promote innovation and creativity while ensuring ethical use and academic integrity.

Make Sure You:

  • Understand the policies and guidelines relevant to your specific context, whether academic, professional, or personal.
  • Know the capabilities and limitations of the AI tool you are using (perform real-time internet searches and rely on static datasets that may be outdated, many AI tools do not reveal their data sources…)
  • Ensure that your work remains your own, with AI serving as a supportive tool.

Be Aware That:

  • Generative AI may generate inaccurate, biased, or incomplete information.
  • AI is not an original source; it synthesizes content from unidentified sources.
  • It can create fictional quotations, citations, or references.
  • It is essential to consult reliable, original sources to verify information.

Best Practices to Follow:

  • Evaluate Critically: Assess AI-generated outputs for accuracy, relevance, and quality.
  • Verify Sources: Double-check any quotations, citations, or references created by AI.
  • Be Transparent: Disclose how AI was used in your work, whether for content creation, brainstorming, or administrative tasks.

AI response quality depends on your prompts. Use these tips for best results:

Be Clear and Specific

  • Use precise language and include all relevant details.

  • Avoid vague or overly broad prompts that may produce generic responses.

Break Down Complex Questions

  • If your query has multiple parts, divide it into separate, focused questions.

  • Example: Instead of asking, "How does AI work, and how is it used in business?", ask two distinct questions.

Provide Context

  • Include background information or specify the response format.

  • Ask AI to adopt a specific role for more tailored responses:

  • Example: "Explain AI applications in business using bullet points," "Act as a strategy consultant and outline key AI-driven innovations in my industry," or "Explain neural networks as if you were a professor teaching an introductory AI course."

Refine and Experiment

  • If the initial response isn’t helpful, rephrase your prompt or add more details.

  • Experiment with different wordings to guide AI toward the desired answer.

Request Examples and Explanations

  • When appropriate, ask for examples or step-by-step explanations.

  • Example: "Can you provide examples of AI in healthcare?"

Check for Biases and Accuracy

  • AI-generated content may contain biases or inaccuracies.

  • Always verify important information using reliable sources.

Encourage Creativity or Precision

  • Specify whether you need a creative response or factual accuracy.

  • Example: "Generate marketing campaign ideas" for creativity, or "List key AI ethics principles" for precision.
